The main gallery had a class of art that I would call tedious art. Not
that it's tedious to watch, but that it's noticeable quality is how
tedious it would be to construct. Think of it as Lego sculptures with
everyday objects. This here was an entire wall of laminated paper.

So on xmas eve, we spent the whole day just travelling back to the states. It was suprpisingly smooth, however I think it's the day on which the most screaming babies fly in case you wanted to know. This whole trip was over too quickly, but was amazing. I hope to be travelling again soon. But until then... the photo blog goes on a hiatus.

We said goodbye to Rome today. Last night, Alessandro finally arrived and we got to hang out with him for a short while and then flew out to Gatwick. However our flight doesn't leave until tomorrow, so we were very fortunate that Spiros and Jitka let us stay in their flat for the night. So one more night in Crystal Palace and we are leaving this foreign place.

Motorino Day

Well we actually got up earlier today and since Vittorio was too tired to explain how to use the buses more efficiently last night, he let me use the motorino (scooter). I admit that I was scared a little at first, but by the end of the day, I was weaving and cutting off traffic like a true roman. Not even the rain stopped us and we made it home safe and sound.

Made it to the Vatican Museum today. They have sculptures of cherubs choking swans. Awesome.

We finished our first day of Rome taking some night shots and briefly stopping by the Colosseo. We finished off with some seafood dinner and my usual roman dessert: nutella and ricotta calzone. So full, but so good.

Today we hoped to get up early... at noon we set off on our religious voyage to Vatican City. We had fun navigating the buses and metro and spent longer than necessary at the St. Peter's Cathedral. We tried to get into the Vatican Museum, but it was closed.

On the 19th, we drove from Bielsko-Biala to Krakow, but on the way we stopped off at Oswiencim. That was the name of the town in Poland where Auschwitz was. We stumbled upon this great tour guide and we tagged along. He would walk fast to an exhibit, say a few words and then run to the next. An excerpt: "I am seating 6 persons in this bed." You could tell that he was very passionate about this place.

We drove to a nearby town to go skiing. At the top of the mountain, we were able to see the sun!

I will keep it simple. I woke up. I gave a talk at the Academy of Computer Science in Bielsko. I took a gondola up Mount Szyndzielnyia. I walked through the forest. I ate lots of great Polish food. End of story.

So I usually don't like to write a lot of boring words on this blog, but I will make an exception for my December 16th post here:

The plan was simple really. We had a plane ticket from Madrid to Luton (outside London) via EasyJet and a ticket from Luton to Katowice in Poland where Janusz could pick us up. In order to make our 10:55 am Madrid flight, we had to be there by 10:15, but we planned to get there by 9 or so. I should interrupt this now and tell you about how we kept being amazed about how early everything closed in Madrid. The bars would close early, people were not out late much, and the lights of the palace turned off early. Well it turns out that during our whole visit to Madrid, the clock on my phone was one hour off and the real time was always one hour later than we thought. We didn't realize this until we made it to the Madrid Airport and found that all the clocks showed that it was 10:10 instead of the 9:10 that we thought it was. We ran up to the checkin counter that said Last Call for London and told them we were here to checkin. The guy just said, "Esta Cerrado." After a while, I had to ask him what our options were and he said that we had to just change flights. We went back to the EasyJet desk and the next flight was to Gatwick and it would arrive at 8:00pm, which wouldn't allow us to make our 8:15 Luton flight. Gatwick is an hour and a half away from Luton. So we were told that there would be a British Airways flight at noon that we should try to get on, however that was in a different terminal. So we took the shuttle to the BA terminal and stood in line only to find out that they had seats, but that they were 900 euros each! Needless to say, we turned that option down, but then went over the information desk and found out about another option at CometAir that was would get to Gatwick at 5pm. So we went back on the shuttle, waited in line again and talked to CometAir. Amazingly they had seats available and they were 140 euros for the both of them. However, landing in Gatwick at 5pm and making a 7:30 boarding in Luton is a tall order. As soon as we landed, we rushed through passport control. Cindy went through customs without her luggage to ask for Gatwick to Luton travel information while I waited for the luggage. As soon as we found out, we made our way over to the trains, purchased tickets and took the next express train to Luton. That train was scheduled to arrive at Luton at 7:05, but it got delayed and arrived at 7:15. However, that train doesn't take you to the airport. You must take a shuttle. We ran to down the esclators to the shuttle and I even accidentally dropped my suitcase down the esclator. We made it on the shuttle and then arrived at the airport at 7:30. I was in charge of luggage and Cindy ran for the checkin line. We made it! Luckily I got cell reception and was able to email Janusz to pick us up in Katowice. Janusz' mom had even made us sandwiches and I slept well, if only for a few hours before I had to wake up and give a presentation in the morning.

But one quesion remains: Why is Madrid one hour later in time than London? Look at a map. It doesn't make sense.

Oh, well. I am safe and sound in Bielsko now.

We ate here. This restaurant is at a few places in the Madrid Airport. I wonder if they know how their name sounds in English. ;)

Last Last Day in Madrid

I liked this building near the train station. The traffic kept whizzing by. Immediately after this pic, there was an accident.

Madrid has these great Limpiezas (Cleaners) that really do a good job at keeping the streets of Madrid looking spic and span. Each of them wear this bright green and yellow jacket and have their own pair of trash cans that they wheel around.

This is Real Palacio. It was lit beautifully from afar, but unfortunately when we got close, they shut off the lights. Why do they shut them off at 11:30pm?

Last day in Madrid

Sorry, but this is the first time I have been able to make a post in a while. I am sitting here at Janusz' house in Bielsko, Poland and I will catch you up, don't worry :)

So it was the last full day in Madrid (Dec. 15) and we decided to try and see all of the places that we still had left to visit. What's more is that the museums in Madrid are free on Saturday afternoons!

We stopped by the Madrid train station. It was pretty impressive.

Although, Cindy wasn't very patient with my persistent picture taking because she was hungry.

So I took her to a doner kebab house to have a bocadillo (sandwich). It was great and I took a photo of my ice for my Cola Light.

Glass elevators are my favorite and they have one at the Reina Sofia, which is their modern art museum. We found the Sofia to be much better than even Madrid's claim to fame: the Prado.

A Night Stroll

This is one of the many markets found in each of the plazas. Each of them have a theme: food, xmas trinkets, etc. This one is Plaza Del Angel that has jewelry. How exciting :P

This is a bustling shopping district, called Apreca,which is off of Puerta Del Sol. I used to listen to this song in spanish class in high school about being in the Puerta Del Sol and now I know what they were talking about.

Calle Alcala. They really know how to light up all of their streets and alley ways. I wonder how much electricidad they use.

That´s spanish for the McDonald´s tagline. I always love trying McDonald´s in other places and seeing how they cater their cuisine to the local tastes. In Madrid, I was quite amazed to find that one of their main sandwiches was the Capricho Hindu. Think of it as a McPollo with lots of curry sause on it. It was interesting, but I think I will have a regular McPollo next time ;)

They have their version of the Monopoly promotional game going on. Although, this one is Hi-Tech!

They have a great metro system here, but security is very high. Probably a result of the bombings. We made it to our hostel, had a big Spanish lunch and then took a siesta :) The siesta of course took longer than expected and then we just walked around the plazas here and made our way to a tapas bar.

I got up very early and picked up Cindy. Amazingly, she didn't want to sleep, so went for a traditional english breakfast: beans, sausage, bacon, egg, potatoes, boiled tomato, and mushroom. Then we decided to hit the London Eye, which is a big ferris wheel along the Thames River. Nice Views from there.

Today was pretty low key. Tagged along for shopping. We were quite productive shoppers, aquiring a laptop, printer, router, and two pairs of trousers (pants for americans). Jitka gave me a haircut and I helped her get her laptop set up in return ;)

I had to get up at reasonable time this morning, which was pretty hard for me. Then I had to walk through the pouring rain to the coach station. Fortunately, I was early and got to take the earlier bus... I mean coach. Surprisingly, I navigated the trains and made it Spiros and Jitka's without a hitch. I even arrived in enough time to help make the schnitzel, salad and strudel to prepare for their party. The party was a blast and everyone loved it.

Last Night in Soton

So I will take it easy on the pictures tonight since yesterday was so crazy. I went to a holiday party for the engineers at the university. Needless to say it was over quick and was quite mellow. Then we followed it up with a greek restaurant where the company was much better than the food. The night ended with mellow laptop video watching. All in all I have enjoyed Southampton.

The wine we had wasn't the biggest hit.

As soon as I got into Salisbury, I found out that the last bus for Stonehenge left in 1 minute. And not only that, but it was the last bus to leave Stonehenge as well so I would only have 10 minutes over there. I still took it. Everything closes so early in this country :)

I quickly returned to Salisbury where I had a couple hours to kill before the bus back to Southampton.

A lot happened today and there will be many pictures as well. I took a bus to Salisbury and then another bus to Stonehenge, which is highly overrated. I then made it back home in time to go out for a dinner with a goup of people from the university. Let the pictures commence.

On my way walking to the Southampton Bus Station I passed by a very appealing house. I consequently learned that this is a euphemism for place where Quakers meet.

I then got lost because I didn't realize that I wanted the Coach Station, not the Bus Station. They all look like buses to me...

Fortunately this helpful sign was along the way to help me know where to walk toward all the dead soccer balls that go to heaven.

And to wait for my Salisbury bus... I mean coach... I went into a department store and noticed all sorts of things I never knew I wanted.

And I hit the road.

I got up at my usual late time and went by campus again today. Had some meetings and then went out to a great dinner in Portsmouth. Then Alessandro and I finished off the night by watching a propaganda movie.

I slept in today... a lot. I didn't get up until 3:30 when Alessandro called. I think it was the soccer that did me in :)

So Alessandro and I went to this Indian restaurant and then went to a couple of bars. We ended up at this bar called the Hobbit. Aparrently nothing attracts nerdy phd students like a little Tolkien reference (emphasis on the word little).

So I stayed up til 4am last night and was able to still function today. I got to see the University of Southampton for the first time. I made presentation and I learned a very important rule: if you are going to give a talk and they hook you up with a portable mic and then you have to go to the bathroom, switch off the mic first ;) I had a close call.

It was kind of colorful inside, but a lot of security doors. Even ones to get out.

When I was walking around, the sundial made it clear that it was 3:15 and I had to go back in for a meeting.

Sleepless in Southampton

Spiros and Jitka were kind of enough to drive me to Southampton under the strict condition that they we make a detour stop and Portsmouth for Steki Taverna, which was a great Greek restaurant. I found Alessandro just in time to join him at a blues bar.

I came back and spent a few hours battling a wireless router, but alas I am victorious! Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to post ;)

We decided to take them up on their offer.

2. Crystal Palace has a respectable football club.

Hello all,

Due to technical and temporal difficulties, I was unable to blog
during my Europe trip a few weeks ago. But I wanted to at least show
you guys some of the things I saw so I put up some pictures in a
gallery. If I get some more time someday I might try and piece
together a journal/blogish thing, but just think of each picture as
999 words (I always get the last word).

My trip was from Dec. 13-24 and there is an album for each day. After

For Day 2 of Mannheim, Jen took me to the nearby town of Heidelberg where there is a castle from the 1600s. The castle has been through some wars and fires so it is not in good shape. Then we walked down to the Christmas market, has some Gluwein (heated wine) and hung out. The whole time in Heidelberg I had Carianne strapped to my back.
